Building the common good
Our purpose
Toc H has been transforming lives and communities for over 100 years. Our origins are in the trenches of the First World War, and the soldiers who returned home were inspired to create a better world. Transforming lives and communities remains our mission today - we support people across the UK to create thriving and safe communities where people can grow, prosper and build the resilience they need to live a happy and productive life.
Why the common good?
A Common Good approach strives towards a society in which everyone has the resources and support they need to flourish. This requires mutuality in relationships, fairness in dialogue and equal access to resources, as well as recognising the obligation on all of us to contribute to the common good where we can. Toc H wants to see stable family life, good schools, affordable nourishment and good quality healthcare, as well as safe, fair and ecologically sustainable communities. We work to understand the fractures in society and aim to heal divides across polarised groups.
What we do
Our Hubs work in neighbourhoods across the UK, delivering crucial services co-produced alongside local people, advocating for the resources necessary to promote mental and physical wellbeing and building personal and organisational capacity for positive change. Our local Hubs are at the centre of our organisation, managed by local residents and committed to building the common good. We work with communities to respond to needs they want to address. Current activity at our Hubs includes work with young people (building confidence and wellbeing, including boxing classes and SEND groups) and providing safe spaces to young families and those at risk of homelessness. Our Hubs also work to address social isolation in older people though craft sessions, food clubs and more. Our national team provides Finance, HR, Fundraising and Project Management support to our Hubs
A membership organisation
Toc H is a user-led organisation. People in communities where we work have the opportunity to influence our organisation, from co-designing our programmes of activity to electing our Board of Trustees. There are many ways to get involved with Toc H and make a difference. We welcome new members, who commit themselves to working for the common good. Others may wish to donate to our cause (see the donate button above), volunteer their time, or spread the word about our work. No matter how big or small your contribution, you can help us build a better world.
